Meta Tags

Meta Tags are one of the most basic elements of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

Basically, Meta Tags are ‘hidden’ words in your code that helps search engines like Google find your webpage for users by summarising your content and highlighting keywords.

Meta Tags have been around since SEO begun and were for a long time seen as one of the most critical tasks to ensure search engine ranking were optimised. A lot of debate still goes on regarding how important Meta Tags are to SEO these days, but most would agree they still play an important role.

There are 3 important types of Meta Tags:

  1. Meta Title – This is the main headlines that is displayed in search engine listings.
    <title> Title text here </title>
  2. Meta Description – The description is the second line that appears in search engine searches that gives a short description of the particular webpage. It is recommended that Meta Descriptions are are between 150-160 characters in length.
    <meta name=”description” content=”This is where you put your site’s summary” />
  3. Meta Keywords – These are effectively fully ‘hidden’ keywords on your site that help search engines find relevant webpages for searches.
    <meta name=”keywords” content=”SEO, Hacker, Google, Search, etc” />
